The Dutch Island of Terschelling, where our stables are situated, is famed for its incredible nature reserves and beaches, offering excellent bird watching opportunities while the sharp-eyed may also catch a glimpse of native seals on the coastline. When the tide is out, visitors can ride along the ocean floor or canter along the miles of sandy beaches. When the tide is in, the gentle Friesians that call Terschelling home will be happy to treat their riders to a swim in the sea. Horse riding holidays in the Netherlands are not just for riders either. With plenty of family activities available, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
Dutch Equestrian Traditions
The Netherlands has a strong equestrian culture, with Dutch Warmbloods being the mount of choice for competitive Olympic sports including dressage, cross country, and show jumping. These horses are renowned for their versatility, athleticism, and temperament, making them favourites among equestrians worldwide. The country's dedication to the sport is evident in its breeding programs and training facilities, which are among the best in the world. The Netherlands equestrian Olympic team took gold in 1992, 2006, and 2014, and silver in 2022, showcasing their consistent excellence on the international stage. There are other Dutch native breeds such as the Gelderlander, Groninger, Dutch Draft Horse and, of course, the most famous, the coal-black Friesian horse, featured on our riding holiday.
Our Horse Riding Holidays in Holland
We currently offer one horse riding holiday in Holland, our Friesian Beach and Forest ride. Situated on the beautiful Friesian island of Terschelling, this ride offers stunning views of the island's vast nature reserve, ranging from the picturesque blue ocean with miles of white sand beaches to the sprawling cranberry fields. And if that's not enough, prepare to be blown away by the 30km long sandy beach on the northern coast. This is the perfect spot for beach-loving riders who crave adventure along the shores. Terschelling is also an excellent location for bird watching, offering a prime vantage point for observing migrating birds.
The rides are available to all levels of rider from beginner onwards. The riding abilities are separated, each ride is tailored to the needs and competence level of the riders to ensure that everybody gets maximum enjoyment from their trip. With over 100 kilometres of bridleways to choose from, visitors will be spoilt for choice. The riding groups are deliberately kept small, with no more than 6 horses per group, and rides could be along sandy beaches, through the dunes or in the forests, depending on the preferences of the group. Evening rides are a real treat, finishing with hot drinks and toasted marshmallows around a campfire.
The horses on Terschelling are mainly home-bred and chosen for their calm temperaments. They are predominantly Friesians, although the centre is also home to 6 Shires, 3 Fell ponies and several donkeys that are well suited to the needs of young children who may be intimidated by the size of the larger horses. Accommodations are within comfortable and well-equipped self-catering apartments close to the farm, with breakfast included and served in the on-site restaurant. A trampoline is available for guest use while children are welcome to spend time with the friendly farm animals.
A beginner's programme is also available for new riders, and non-riders can opt to sightsee from the comfort of a covered horse-drawn wagon. Accompanying non riders can also spend time exploring the Boschplaat nature reserve and the polder, join a an ocean-floor hiking tour, walk across the dunes and enjoy views across the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. Sailing and kite surfing are popular activities for the adventurous, while history enthusiasts will not want to miss touring the Terschelling Bunker Museum, which is open from April to October.
The Best Time to Visit the Netherlands

Summer temperatures typically stay below 20°C, while winter temperatures usually remain above freezing. The summer is most popular with visitors who are keen to enjoy a multi-activity holiday, spending time on the beach and partaking in water sports as well as riding. July and August are usually the busiest times, coinciding with school summer holidays, although with summer weather lasting in the Netherlands from April to October, those travellers with flexibility to travel outside of peak holiday season will capitalise on pleasing weather and fewer crowds.
Lovers of theatre and art may be inclined to visit in June to experience the Oerol Festival, which is the largest site-specific arts festival in Europe. During the Oerol Festival each June, the island of Terschelling is transformed into a stage hosting plays, concerts and exhibitions.
