Working cattle estancia near Cordoba, Argentina. Ride with gauchos and experience Argentine hospitality, lovely accommodation and learn to play polo. All levels.

Herding cattle in the Andes

Visit the high Andes of north west Argentina on this unique trail. Ride on ancient Incan pathways, searching for cattle in the high altitude grasslands at 3,000m where condors circle overhead. You'll help the gauchos drive the cattle into corrals and assist with sorting and branding.This destination is for experienced riders who want to experience local Argentinian culture by taking part in one of the last truly authentic cattle drives in the world. Accommodation is in mountain cabins with two nights in a hotel for a true gaucho experience.

Desert portion of the ride

Ride along ancient Inca trails in the Andes Mountains where life goes on as it has for centuries. From the dry Calchaquí desert on the west of the Dead Lion Range of the Andes, we cross at 3,000m (9,000ft) where condors roam and descend into a different world of lush green valleys and tropical forests of Lerma. 

En-route we stay in the homes of the local Calchaqui Indians with 3 nights of camping under the spectacular southern hemisphere stars in the high Andes, an unmissable experience. A relaxed ride with beds and hot showers all or most nights for riders who can walk, trot and canter.

Taking a rest

The ultimate challenge - cross the High Andes along the remote historic route. For the adventurous, tough and reasonably fit only.

  • 2023: January 8 & 22; February 12, March 2
  • 2024: January 7, 21; February 11, 29.
  • Additional dates are available on requests for groups of 6 or more from Dec - March.
  • Trip Length: 10 days / 9 nights / 7 days riding
  • Approximate riding time per day: 6 to 9 hours
  • Meeting point: Santiago, Chile at 2pm.
    End point of ride - Mendoza, Argentina. It is possible to catch a bus back to Santiago at the end of the ride - this takes 6 hours and costs in the region of $40
  • Riding Ability Required: From fit and confident novice onwards. Min age 10.
  • Usual Group Size: 10-15
  • Transfer: Included from Santiago and back to Mendoza at end of ride. Transfer time is approx 2 hours.
