This vacation is based at a superb equestrian centre located near the old traditional village of Pego, approximately 150 km from Lisbon in the central Portuguese region of Santarém. Expert dressage and show-jumping tuition is offered (in English), on Lusitano and warmblood horses up to intermediate level. Lessons can be combined with horseback hacking out and disciplines mixed as wanted. Comfortable accommodation a short walk away with restaurant quality meals.
Accommodation is in a modern guesthouse, or two private cottages decorated in the traditional style, all furnished to a high standard. The food is traditional Portuguese cuisine, cooked in the restaurant nearby with menu changing weekly, using local produce available at the time of year.
A stable of Lusitanos are used for dressage, with some being trained up to Grand Prix level, and Warmbloods (mostly KWPN) for jumping. The centre can cater for all levels of horseback rider and offers a chance to experience different types of horse.
After lessons, ride out in the sun on a relaxing hack through the diverse landscape of olive trees, cork tree forests and green pastures along Tagus river. The wetlands is home to many species of birds and a delight for bird watchers.
The picturesque village of Golegã, located just a 30-minute drive away from the centre. It is the site for the annual Lusitano horse fair - centered around celebrating and showing off the amazing capabilities of the famous Portuguese horse breed. The fair runs in November and might be incorporated into your stay on request.

Historically, the Portuguese have been the intrepid explorers of the world. In the 15th Century they discovered the sea route to India, via the Cape of Good Hope. Vasco da Gama reached India in 1498 and Pedro Cabral, trying to reach India, discovered Brazil two years later (1500). Other Portuguese explorers reached the Far East, China and Japan. The first circumnavigation of the globe was led by Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan.
