Riding in Greenland

This adventurous equestrian tour will take you through the sheep farming areas of South Greenland. You will see many Norse and Inuit ruins as you journey from one farm to another, overnighting at different farms and meeting local farmers.

The horses are all Icelandic horses and are well-trained and sure-footed in this difficult terrain. The riding tour also heads up into the mountains to see the glaciers, and during your ride along the beach you will see icebergs floating in the sea.  This horseback vacation is aimed at allowing you to experience the daily life and hospitality on the different farms.

Meals consist of hearty local produce. Meat from marine mammals, game, lamb, birds and fish have been the main ingredient in Greenlandic food for generations. The high meat content in the diet provides energy and nourishment all year round in the cold harsh climate.

Additional Comments
I have done several international trail rides, and Jtte was one of the most experienced, knowledgeable and kind guides I've come across. Jtte immediately made us feel welcome, understood some of the travel challenges we had had to get there, and did her upmost to ensure we had the most amazing trip. She spoke very fluent English, as well as her native Danish and Greenlandic which ensured no one felt left out during instruction or over the dinner table conversations. She was very knowledgable on the local culture; I learnt a great deal more than I thought I would. She was incredibly passionate about the care and attention for the horses and our safety, as well as our enjoyment. I should also mention Emily and Iris, assistant guides who were jolly, friendly, passionate about the horses and added good fun to the whole trip.
Horses and Tack

Additional Comments
Very healthy, happy horses. A range of characters to suit different rider preferences. Tack very comfortable, clean and safe. Horses very confident on the open, uneven terrain.

Miscellaneous

Was this trip accurately described to you beforehand?
YES
Please give more details to explain your response:
You experience the true Greenland with this tour. The host farming families were very welcoming and you spend a lot of time with them and their families, in their homes, sharing their facilities and learning all about their culture and way of life. They cooked us beautiful local dishes, and baked wonderful home made bread for our lunches. This trip is immersive in the Greenlandic culture; I felt very lucky to be welcomed into local homes and will remember well all those we met. I know this trip was new to Unicorn Trails, and Sarah as always with her excellent communication helped reassure us with all the information she was able to find out from the hosts. We knew travelling could potentially challenge us and yes we did have a flight delay because of cloud at Narsarsuaq; there was nothing the host nor Unicorn could do about this but everyone worked so well together to communicate and I am so glad I stuck it out and made it there for five excellent days of riding. I believe they are building a new airport which might help, and I personally wouldn't let the challenge of getting there put you off!
Was there anything you should have known and were not told? NO
Please give more details to explain your response:
I would encourage you to take your own helmet if you have one, as they have a limited selection on offer. I would encourage you to take all weather gear, as you may expect it can change quickly and vary a lot. The saddle bags were plenty big enough to carry waterproofs, gloves etc.
What could we do to improve this ride?
Nothing. This is a very challenging environment to attempt to host a 'predictable' trip in, the agenda has to potentially change day to day depending on the weather. However, the hosts and guides did their upmost to ensure we had an incredible experience and they were certainly not phased by the weather; it all added to the adventure of such a unique destination and trip.
How would you rate the difficulty of this ride out of 10 where 1 is very easy and 10 is very advanced?
8
Please explain why you scored it as you did:
Typically 6 hours in the saddle each day. When the ground allowed it safely, we enjoyed tolt, pace and canter. There were many steep inclines and declines as well as loose rubble under foot at times. The horses are very confident but you should have a good balance and seat, not mind heights nor long days in the saddle. You help build the pens at night and tack the horses up. This is an active trip with wonderful long days outside.
Would you recommend Unicorn Trails to your friends?
YES
Please give more details to explain your response:
Sarah King, as always, has been an excellent travel agent to work with. Sarah is prompt in responding to emails. Sarah really demonstrates a care and understanding for any of your concerns and endeavours to help resolve them. I know this was a new trip for Unicorn and I am very grateful they considered supporting it.
May we use you as a reference for other people wishing to go on this ride?
YES

Horses & Riding

All horses in Greenland are Icelandic horses and are well known for their unique pace, the 'tolt'. The horses used on the trail are owned by the farmers and used by the farmers to gather sheep from the mountains at the end of summer, every year. They are surefooted horses who thrive well in both warm summers and cold winters and are happy navigating the tricky terrain.
