Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, known for its longstanding equestrian traditions. Horseback riding remains a vital aspect of Hungarian life, particularly in rural areas. Our selection of horse riding holidays in Hungary explores the country's diverse scenery, numerous national parks, and fascinating history on horseback. These journeys unfold mainly in the Puszta, the expansive plains that sweep across the country, but also along the Danube river and in Transylvania. You will ride well-schooled forward going horses and enjoy comfortable accommodations that reflect authentic Hungarian hospitality.
Most Hungarian horsemen are true experts, and the riding here is aimed at intermediate riders onwards, covering a lot of ground.
Beyond the equestrian experience, Hungary is home to the stunning Lake Balaton, Europe's largest freshwater lake, where you can relax by the shore or engage in various water activities. You'll also have the opportunity to discover the country's many vineyards, which produce some of the most wonderful wines, influenced by the region's unique climate and soil. Like Ireland, Hungary places no restrictions on riders.
Why not finish your trip with a 3-day city break in the capital of Budapest, one of the world’s most beautiful cities? Enjoy the architectural marvels, Baroque thermal baths and Hungarian cuisine.
Equestrian Culture & Traditions
Hungary’s equestrian traditions originated from Magyar nomadic horsemen and evolved to the famous Hussar cavalry units which became central to Hungary’s military power. Hungarians have over 300 words for horse coat colours reflecting the cultural significance of horses.
Hungarians have retained their unique culture, customs, and language despite enduring numerous invasions and occupations, including those by the Mongols, Turkey, and then Austria, followed by a period of communist domination.
Horses and horsemanship continue are a symbol of national identity for Hungarians today. There are many stud farms scattered throughout Hungary including the famous Kisbér and MezĹ‘hegyes national stud farms breeding Shagyar Arabians and Hungarian Warmbloods. Carriage driving is widely practiced, also as a practical means for agricultural tasks. In rural areas, it is still common to see horses pulling ploughs and wagons.
Our Horseback Vacations in Hungary
Both of our horseback vacations in Hungary are located in the Puszta, also known as the Great Hungarian Plains. This expansive flat grassland spans much of the country's eastern and southern regions, offering vast open spaces and pastoral traditions. The Puszta is renowned for its equestrian traditions, with the skilled Hungarian cowboys, known as 'csikós,’ preserving many old practices. Traditional horsemen on the Hortobágy Puszta plains used techniques like the puszta five (standing on two horses while controlling five others) to manage herds, still a skill widely practised and used in displays.
The Puszta Trail
Our Puszta Trail vacation is a full-service trail ride that takes you through the landscape of Puszta. The terrain includes open plains perfect for long canters, shady forest paths and colorful meadows. Riders will explore hidden tracks and small traditional farms in the Kiskunság National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fast point-to-point trail is designed for riders who are experienced in handling horses across open countryside and possess a good level of riding fitness to fully enjoy the adventure.
You'll stay in comfortable local guest houses, which all have en-suite bathrooms, on-site restaurants, and a swimming pool where you’ll be able to relax in after a day of riding. Not only will you be able to experience the thrill of riding spirited horses, but there will also be plenty of opportunities to sample traditional Hungarian cuisine along the way.
Puszta Based Stay
Our Puszta based stay vacation is an excellent choice for riders looking for a more relaxing holiday experience. With less hours of riding and optional sightseeing tours, this vacation offers a perfect balance of leisure and exploration. This holiday offers daily trail rides that allow you to explore the Puszta landscape on well-schooled and willing horses. These horses are a mix of Hungarian half-blood, Kisbéri, and Arabian/Thoroughbred breeds, and are ridden in English tack. For those looking to refine their riding skills, there is also an option to take lessons in the arena during your stay. These lessons cater to intermediate-level riders who are keen on developing a more advanced partnership with horses using gentle techniques.
Accommodation is provided at a comfortable farm with en-suite double rooms, and the on-site pond is perfect for a refreshing swim after a long day of riding. There are also optional sightseeing tours available with excursions to Budapest, the Bábolna National Stud Farm, and wine tasting sessions which can complement the trip.
The Best Time of Year to Visit Hungary
The best months for horse riding in Hungary are generally considered to be May, June, September and October. July and August can be quite hot, and the winter months may be a little chilly. However, the sandy terrain makes sure that there are good riding conditions year-round as it quickly drains water. November offers pleasant daytime temperatures, and if it does turn cold, you can always opt for a relaxing visit to a nearby thermal bath instead of riding.
Getting to Hungary
Hungary is easily accessible from various international locations. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport serves as the main gateway to the country. Direct flights are available from several UK and Irish cities, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin. If you are travelling from other locations, there are connecting flights through major European hubs like Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris.
