A Little Bit About Mongolia
The independent republic of Mongolia is situated in central Asia, with an enormous 2,180 mile border with Russia to the north and an even longer 2,920 mile border with China to the south. Despite being as large as Western Europe, Mongolia has an incredibly low population density with only about 3.4 million people living in the entire country.
Mongolia, previously a satellite state of Russia known as Outer Mongolia, experienced profound transformation following the collapse of communism in Russia. This pivotal shift brought significant changes to Mongolia. The country adopted a parliamentary democracy in 1992, featuring a president elected for a four-year term. This stable political system has fostered growth. A shift to a free market economy helped to develop its tourism industry. Incredibly many Mongolians still live the nomadic lifestyle of the traditional herdsman, a hallmark of the country's cultural identity. Known for its nature, wildlife, and generous people, a riding holiday here offers a chance to explore the vast, unspoiled wilderness of truly nomadic people.
The Landscape
Mongolia has many mountains with the highest peaks in the west. There are quite literally hundreds of lakes, some very large. You'll also find hot springs to bathe in. Then of course we cannot forget the endless steppes or the Gobi Desert where you may find wild camels, Gobi bears, snow leopards and Przewalski horses. These horses are the only truly wild breed of horse. You'll be able to meet the Przewalski horses on our Orkhon Valley and Przewalski Horses Winter Trail.
The Capital: Ulaanbaatar
Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, is an interesting city well worth exploring. From its bustling markets and Soviet-era architecture to its cultural landmarks like the Gandan Monastery and the National Museum of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar offers plenty to discover. We can happily arrange an extra day here as an add-on to your horse trip in Mongolia, giving you a chance to experience both the urban and rural sides of the country.

Getting to Mongolia
International flights arrive at Ulaanbaatar's airport (UBN) which is the main gateway to Mongolia. While there are no direct flights from the UK or USA, convenient connections are available through major hubs like Beijing and Istanbul. Our team is here to ensure every aspect of your horseback trip to Mongolia runs smoothly, from arranging flights to planning trip extensions tailored to your needs. When organizing your journey, remember that Mongolia is in the GMT+7 or GMT+8 time zone, depending on the region.
Remote areas that require internal flights to reach are longer as some padding needs to be built into the trip in case of travel delays.
The Best Time to Travel
The best time for horse riding in Mongolia varies depending on the region and type of tour. The prime riding season runs from June to August, when temperatures are mild, and long daylight hours provide ideal conditions. Each season, however, brings its own charm. Autumm (September-October) sees cooler temperatures with spectacular autumn colours across the steppes. Winter (November–March) presents a challenging yet rewarding option for adventurous riders seeking specialized trails in Mongolia’s rugged, snow-covered landscapes and ice covered lakes. Spring (April–May) features unpredictable weather but rewards visitors with blooming wildflowers and the advantage of fewer tourists.
In late August or early September, you can also witness one of Mongolia's most unique cultural events - the Golden Eagle Festival.
