A week-long horseback tour that starts and ends in the Southern Overberg area of the Western Cape. Spend 5-days on horseback, riding trails over plains of fynbos, exploring nature reserves while game viewing and bird watching from horseback, and not to forget superb beach riding.
This area of fynbos is unique to the Cape and has a huge aray of flowers that grow all through the summer.
The area is a whale-watching hotspot from June to Dec when the Southern Right whales and their calves often come within metres of the coastline. This vacation offers great riding at all paces, including gallops along the beach, for fit intermediate equestrian riders onwards and would be ideal for couples and small groups of friends

Accommodation on the plains is in comfortable guest cottages along the way, at selected farms and reserves. After riding, relax with a good book and a glass of wine or take a stroll around the grounds and gardens.

Additional Comments
Howard knew so much about the area and very passionate about conservation. Guides a little less chatty but were able to answer our questions.

Additional Comments
Horses are working trail horses so a lot leaner than I am used to but couldn't fault their energy or fitness.

Day 1
Collection from Cape Town International Airport and transfer to the farm, arriving mid- afternoon.  Relax at River Gate Farm, or similar enjoying dinner with fellow riders before settling in for the night.

Day 2
After breakfast, meet the horses and find your perfect match. The first day's trail is a round trip following the Klein river to the lagoon and back. Riding on the water’s edge offers superb views of the surrounding mountains and excellent bird watching, including likely sightings of flamingos.  Reach the sandy shores of Walker bay and enjoy your first gallops along the beach.   After a short day of riding, head to the Farm for lunch. Enjoy dinner in Stanford, staying overnight at Whitewater Farm or similar. 3.5 - 4 hours riding.

Day 3
After breakfast transfer to the horse and set out through Walker Bay Nature Reserve to the pristine white beaches of the Walker Bay whale sanctuary, one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching. From June to December, this areas is the whale-watching capital, and with Southern Right whales and their calves often coming within metres of the coastline. Admire their spectacular displays, including breaching, lob-tailing and spy-hopping. Great opportunity for gallops along the beach before the trail then heads east through coastal shrubland, traversing the vast sand dune of die Plaat, and passing through Grootbos Fynbos Nature Reserve, renowed for its botanical diversity. Lunch is taken on the trail.  Finally, ride over Fynbos mountains to the mountain cottage accommodation at Witkrans Farm (or similar). 5 hours riding

Day 4
Today the group ride over Mount Dyer, offering mountain-top views of the entire Walker Bay. Descend to the lagoon mouth of the Uilskraal river for lunch before crossing the river. The route continue toward Pearly Beach along the open coast and beach within Walker bay Reserve. Upon reaching “Die Grys”, ride inland to Duinefontein for an afternoon of game spotting. Look out for tracks of the Cape clawless otter, bushbuck, duiker, grysbok and steenbok. Highlights include beach gallops, magnificent mountain fynbos and ocean views. Overnight at Duinefontein Game Reserve (or similar). 5 hours riding.

Day 5
Today's inland journey begins with a ride through the reserve, home to Eland, Kudu, Hartebeesbok, Zebra and Wildebeest. With luck, there is a chance to see these magnificent animals from horseback. Continue onto the Fynbos plains of Avilla and Heidehof, a botanica hot-spot, before heading west towards the Lomond farm and the valley cottage. Overnight at Amare Farm (or similar). 4-4.5 hours riding.

Day 6
The last day is filled with mountain vistas and beach canters before finally cutting back inland, through the Limestone dunes of Walker Bay, to Stanford Village. Lunch on the beach finishes a remarkable day’s riding through the changing terrain of the area, returning to the farm for dinner. 6 hours riding approx 45km. Overnight at White Water farm or similar.

Day 7
After breakfast, transfer back to Cape Town International Airport to start the journey home.

Please note: All itineraries are given for your guidance only and it may be altered on the ground and in accordance with the prevailing conditions by the organising team.

Horses & Riding

The riding is varied and includes open plains, beach riding, coastal shrubland and fynbos covered mountains. While in the reserves, riders must listen to the guide's instructions and trust the horses instincts when encountering game.

The horses are endurance Boereperd Arab crosses between 14 - 16 hands, they are very lean, fit and well trained.  They are obedient but forward going especially on the beach.  They are all ridden unshod.

Livesage endurance saddles are used with English bridles and mostly snaffle bits.  The saddles have a western feel to them.  Small saddle bags for carrying water are attached to each saddle, the saddles also have straps for tying water proofs/coats.

Rider requirements

Strong intermediate riders onwards who are fit, and comfortable riding at a gallop. The horses are solid but very speedy on the beach. Expect to cover reasonable stretches in trot.
The horses love galloping along the beach and are super fit and fast, if you want to slow them down simply guide them into the softer sand.
4- 6 hours in the saddle each day.

Weight Limit

The weight limit for this ride is 209 lb/95 kg, please enquire if you are an experienced rider exceeding this weight.

Accommodation is at comfortable, well-equipped guest cottages on farms and the game reserve, in twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms where possible. All meals are included throughout the stay.

Alcoholic beverages are not included, White Water and River Gate farm both have fridges with various drinks you can choose from, tally up what you use and pay the guide at the end.  Before heading up into the mountains, there will be an opportunity to select some nice wines or beer from Stanford for the middle 3 nights

White Water Farm also offers a swimming pool so don't forget your swim wear if visiting in the warmer months Oct to March

Climate Summary

The Overberg region in the Western Cape of South Africa experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. In summer (December to February) temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). This period is generally warm and dry with occasional very hot days. Rainfall is minimal during these months. In autumn (March to May) the temperatures gradually cool down from summer highs. March and April may still experience some warm days, while May becomes cooler. Rainfall increases slightly as the region transitions into winter. Winter (June to August) sees temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). This season is cooler and wetter, with occasional cold fronts bringing rain and cooler temperatures. Frost is rare but can occur in some inland areas. In spring (September to November) temperatures gradually warm up from winter lows. September can still be cool, but by November, temperatures start to rise significantly. Rainfall decreases as spring progresses, but occasional showers are still possible. Throughout the year, the region benefits from its proximity to the ocean, which moderates temperatures. However, microclimates can vary, with cooler temperatures experienced in higher elevations and more rainfall in some areas influenced by mountainous terrain.

Health

There is currently a cholera outbreak in South Africa, so ask your doctor in vaccination is appropriate (if you are immune compromised).
The tap water is not safe to drink, we recommend bottled water.

Due to infrastructure problems, there are periodic blackouts called 'load shedding'. This means there is no power for up to 12 hours a day. This could have unforeseen consequences, such as interruption to the cold chain for food and medicines.

COVID: Be sure to check the latest COVID regulations for travelling in any country you visit.

You should always bring any regular prescription drugs you may need with you.

Awareness of Malaria risk and bite avoidance is recommended and if travelling to an area of Malaria risk in season we recommend speaking to your doctor about anti-malarial medication

According to the 2018 UNAIDS Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world, with 7.1 million people living with HIV. HIV prevalence is high among the general population at 18.9%. You should exercise normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV/AIDS; avoid contact with bodily fluids and keep any cuts or wounds properly clean and covered.

Health and medical facilities are generally of a good standard and readily available near larger centres. If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 10177 and ask for an ambulance. You should contact your insurance/ medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Please refer to your country’s latest health guideline for travel in South Africa and contact your own GP for up to date advice on vaccinations and prophylaxis prior to travel.

Health (ride specific)

Be aware of ticks in the sandy fynbos.

Electricity

Also be aware that due to infrastructure problems, there is 'load shedding', meaning there is no power for up to 12 hours at a time. This could have unforeseen consequences, such as interruption to the cold chain for food and medicines. In South Africa the supply voltage is 230V. If the appliance is a single voltage rated appliance, it will need to operate at the same voltage as the supply voltage of the country i.e. 230V. If this is not the case it should be used alongside a voltage transformer or converter to allow the appliance to work safely and properly.

Mobile, WiFi and charging

There is electricity and cell coverage, WIFI, and connectivity at all overnight stops. Signal may be weak in some areas of the ride. If using a GoPro please ensure to have the permission of the group to be filmed.

Other Country Information

South Africa's land area is 1,228,376 km.2 (larger than The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy & Germany combined). It borders Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland & Zimbabwe to the north, and entirely surrounds Lesotho (a total land border of 4,750 km.). It has a coastline of 2,954 km, with few natural harbours. South Africa is an exhilarating, spectacular and complex country. With its post-apartheid identity still in the process of definition, there is undoubtedly an abundance of energy and sense of progress about the place. The infrastructure is constantly improving, the climate is kind and there are few better places to see Africa's wildlife. The international dialing code for South Africa is +27 and they use the metric weights and measures system, so kilometres and kilograms instead of miles and pounds. There is approximately 1.6 kilometres in a mile and 2.2 pounds in a kilogram. The time zone is GMT plus two hours. Always collect your luggage on arrival at any local airport and take it through customs. Most of the South African smaller airports don’t have customs clearance. Even if the airline tells you that your luggage can be checked through, it is not true. At local airports there are a lot of porters who can be of great help if you are in a hurry to find your check in counter or your gate. However they sometimes ask for a lot of money. R 50,00 is more then enough to give them when they have been of great help, if they have only pushed the trolley, R 20,00 should be enough. If you travel by car and police stop you for speeding or something else you might have done wrong, don’t give them any cash money, always ask for a ticket. If they persist, ask to speak to their supervisor. Also the toll gates don’t take international credit cards. South Africa has a high rate of crime including carjacking and robberies. Be cautious when visiting popular tourist attractions and destinations and in and around transport hubs, including airports. The risk of violent crime to visitors travelling to the main tourist destinations is generally low
