Riding in Namibia is the ultimate adventure for fit, adventurous riders, promising an unforgettable holiday experience amidst some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. With vast deserts, rugged mountains, and abundant wildlife, this Southern African gem offers breathtaking scenery for equestrian enthusiasts. Beyond the thrill of horseback riding, Namibia provides exceptional programmes for non-riders, particularly nature lovers and photographers, making it a dream destination for those captivated by the beauty of the wilderness. Whether you're in the saddle or behind the lens, Namibia promises an extraordinary journey through its untamed, natural wonders.
As one of the least densely populated countries in the world (second only to Mongolia, another riding paradise) its vast and dramatic emptiness offer wonderful landscapes for exhilarating horse-riding adventures. From the remote, awe-inspiring Damaraland to the haunting Skeleton Coast with its shipwrecks and seal colonies, the variety of landscapes is remarkable. The Namib Desert, with its towering red dunes and rugged terrain, offers an adventure that tests endurance while providing stunning views and memorable sunsets. Our horse riding holidays in Namibia are not just about riding; they are about connecting with nature, and capturing perfect photographs.
A Little Bit About Namibia
Namibia, located on the southwestern coast of Africa, is a county of wildlife, vast tranquil wildness and dramatic desert scenery. It is one of the least densely populated countries in the world with huge open spaces. It is a former German colony and has a stable democratic government. Its Atlantic coastline on the west has almost 1000 miles of desolate beaches. It's here you'll find the much-documented Skeleton Coast and the remarkable desert elephants that, largely thanks to David Attenborough, Namibia has become famous for.
Namibia is also recognized for its commitment to conservation, with numerous national parks and reserves protecting endangered species like the black rhino and cheetah. The country's vibrant cultures, including the Himba, Herero, and San people, offer insights into ancient traditions and ways of life. With clear skies and expansive vistas, Namibia is a paradise for riders and photographers, providing endless opportunities to capture its striking beauty.
Wildlife viewing is best in the northern parts with the Etosha Pan, Damaraland and the Caprivi Strip all worth visiting. Wildlife viewing here is excellent, virtually guaranteed, as the waterholes attract many animals. We offer riding in the Damaraland/Elephant Skeleton Coast area. Further game viewing and good riding is offered near Windhoek, the capital.
Our Horse Riding Trails in Namibia
The Namib Desert Trail is the flagship horseback riding vacation in Namibia and is definitely not for the faint hearted. Billed as the toughest ride in the world, this challenging 12 day ride covers 400 km across the Namib desert. On this riding holiday you see all of Namibia's landscapes, from the highlands and semi-desert sheep farms, down the magnificent escarpment, through stoney and mountainous desert, red sand dunes and finally the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Sooner or later all serious riders end up here! A shorter, 6-night version of this trail is also available.
The un-worldly Skeleton Coast Trail is another highlight, known for its eerie beauty and historical intrigue. Riders traverse 20-50 km per day over rough, sandy terrain, with opportunities for fast-paced canters and gallops across the plains. The trail includes encounters with shipwrecks, whale bones, and Cape Fur Seal colonies, with the changing light providing perfect photographic moments. Evenings are spent at seaside campsites, sharing stories around the campfire.

It is surprising to see how they have adapted to these unlikely surroundings. Damaraland is a spectacular region, almost untouched, with vibrant colours and expansive open spaces, ancient craters, and remnants from prehistoric times—not to mention the formidable Skeleton Coast. This horseback safari in Namibia is perfect for fit, experienced riders seeking an exhilarating challenge.
The Best Time of Year to Visit Namibia
The best time to visit Namibia is from April to September generally when the days are sunny and warm (25 Celsius) with cool, even cold evenings. This period, which coincides with the Southern Hemisphere's winter, offers milder temperatures, making it more comfortable for extended journeys through the desert landscapes. At other times the desert is too hot to make riding practical during the day. Temperatures begin to climb mid to late September with the rainy season beginning in November, peaking in January and ending in March/April.
