Excellent horse riding holiday in Spain. Ride through the Sierra de Gredos on Roman roads exploring the many medieval villages with perfectly preserved architecture and style. The horses are all Pure Spanish (PRE) and very responsive, accommodation on each night is in very comfortable small hotels and guest houses with en suite bedrooms, the food typical of the region. This Spanish horse riding holiday will appeal to riders who are interested in a combination of scenery and culture with comfortable hotels, good company and beautiful horses.

SAMPLE ITINERARY - GREDOS MOUNTAINS


Day 1

NAVARREDONDA DE GREDOS
Arrival at Madrid Airport in Spain and transfer to the first night's lodging in Hostal Almanzor. Here we enjoy dinner and have the chance to learn a little about the route of your riding holiday for the coming week.

Day 2
NAVARREDONDA DE GREDOS – ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO
The ride starts in Navarredonda de Gredos, a mountain town at a height of 1525 metres. In this town King Alfonso XIII ordered to build the first touristic national “Parador”, which is now the heart of Alto Gredos, and from which you can see Almanzor´s Peak (2593 m), the highest in all Gredos.
We go over the north of Sierra de Gredos, we find the source of Tormes river and we take the route to Puerto del Pico (1395 metres) to cross the ridge. Then we get to the south of Gredos where we find the weather immediatly warmer. We continue the route along Valle del Tietar through villages and fields confined beteen the Tietar river (400 metres) and the heights of Gredos (2500 metres).

Day 3
ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO – BARRANCO DE LAS CINCO VILLAS – ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO 
Via a perfectly preserved Roman road we cross the Barranco de las Cinco Villas, a series of villages located at a height of 400 metres. This Roman road is still used for the “transhumancia” , an ancient cattle and sheep trail to take the lifestock to better pastures each year.

Day 4
ARENAS DE SAN PEDRO - CANDELEDA
We head to Candeleda and along the way, we visit the Church of Chilla (Chilla is the Patron Saint of Gredos) and the ancient Celtic settlement El Raso 2nd century B.C.

Day 5
CANDELEDA – VILLANUEVA DE LA VERA
We leave Castilla y León provonce today entering Extremadura via Valle de la Vera. Along the length of this valley we find small towns with ancient houses made of wood and adobe, many of them with the traditional balconies.
We find also tobacco and red pepper plantations, orchards and many tree species (chestnut trees, orange trees, walnut trees, olive trees and cherrys). Estrabon the Greek, located the the “famous Elysian Fields, place of fortunate life, gods´s room and rest of the righteous men” here.

Day 6
VILLANUEVA DE LA VERA – GUIJO DE SANTA BÁRBARA
We ride through Villanueva de la Vera and Valverde de la Vera , finding lovely trditional villages. Through Jarandilla de la Vera we ride up to Guijo de Santa Bárbara, a little village located in hillside of Gredos, the highest village of Valle de la Vera.

Day 7
GUIJO DE SANTA BÁRBARA – GARGANTA LA OLLA
We continue through Valle de la Vera towards Cuacos de Yuste, where we visit its monastery. This is the place Emperor Carlos V retired in 1556 and died in 1558.
We finish our adventures in Garganta la Olla, a village located in Gredos´s hillside and declared to be of artistic and historical value in 1978 due to its perfectly preserved typical mountain architecture.

Day 8
Departure and transfer to Madrid after breakfast.
