Riding through shady forests

VULKAN TRAIL - GERMANY

more photos | enquiry | availability check

This horse riding holiday is in an area of Germany that is famous not only for its beautiful nature - rolling green forests and croplands in an ancient volcanic landscape - but also for top quality food in the hundreds of hotels and eateries dotted around. The region is know as the Vulkaneifel and the varied terrain allows for riding at changing paces through forests and rolling open farmland. The horses are substantial and beautifully looked after, responsive and forward going. Riding is western style. The fun-filled itinerary takes us on a voyage of discovery of stone quarries, lava pits and subterranean vault cellars. Overnight accommodation is in neat clean German guest houses with en-suite bathrooms or B&B in private homes, all very comfortable.

SAMPLE ITINERARY - VULKAN TRAIL

Day 1 - Tuesday
Arrive in Germany at Frankfurt Hahn Airport in time for the 5pm transfer to your first guest house (about an hour drive), settle in and enjoy a good dinner.

Day 2
A relaxed start to the day with an opportunity to sleep late before a full breakfast. Meet the horses. We start todays ride after lunch at about 2pm. We depart towards the Nitzl River, past Nitstal to end in a small hotel surrounded by woods. Here we have a comfortable evening, enjoying Spanish food and drinks on the terrace with our horses visible in the field next door.

Day 3
After another full breakfast we head out past the reservoir and the many lava pits of the region, then heading high into the volcanic hills with some panoramic views to the Genovefa cave. At midday we stop for a relaxing break in the beer garden of the cloister of Maria Laach with an opportunity to see the this magnificent well preserved building later. After lunch we follow a geological trail along and above the Laacher lake in the Pellenz. Once again we arrive at a comfortable hotel in a small village with good food for the night.

Day 4
After yet another extensive breakfast we wind along ancient paths through old forests to Mendig to arrive in the afternoon. Here we have an opportunity to visit the lava museum and descend into the mines on a private tour. Lava rock, pumice and basalt has been mined here since the 1100s until the 1960s. Many of the old caverns were used for beer storage once mining was stopped - a fascinating insight into medieval Europe. After the tour we head to the Volcano brewery for dinner and a few beers and we overnight at the Brewery hotel.

Day 5
Today we trot and canter along the heights of the volcano country and over the Hochsimmern Mountain descending into a beautiful valley. Our lunch stop is in the Hammes mill beside Bürresheim Castle. After lunch we ride past the Silversand pit in the gold mining village of Monreal before finishing with a wine tasting of the wine grower's vespers in the vault cellar. Tonight we enjoy a comfortable night in the rooms of the wine gallery.

Day 6
Another extensive breakfast (this area is renowned for good food, wine and beer!) we ride past the Lion's Castle through the old lanes of Monreal. At a good pace we trot and canter through the valleys and typical rolling volcano country following an old pilgrimage path down to Saint Jost. We enjoy lunch at the atmospheric pit Bendisberg with some delicious local specialities. We finish at the home ranch of the horses with a traditional Eifeler coffee board in the late afternoon. Transfer to hotel for our last dinner.

Day 7
After a last full Germany breakfast we transfer back to Frankfurt Hahn for 11am.
