This horse riding holiday in Germany is located in an area famous for its wine production. Grapes have been grown in this part of Germany since Roman times and some of the best wines in the world originate here in the Ahr Valley. At 506 hectares (1250 acres) and 15 miles in length, it is one of the country's smallest and most northerly grape growing areas, and well off the beaten paths for white wine tasting along the Rhine and Mosel rivers. What's also different about the Ahr is that it produces red, not white, wines. It's serene, rural setting; miles of paths for riding; numerous historical sites; and alkaline thermal baths in Bad Neuenahr, make it an attractive destination for a riding holiday. See this article on the Ahr Valley wines for more details.
We ride on substantial quality horses on a fun filled holiday which includes all the must see sights of the area. Overnight accommodation is in neat clean German guest houses with en-suite bathrooms or B&B in private homes, all very comfortable. We recommend this delightful German equestrian vacation.
Day 1 - Tuesday
Arrive in Germany at Frankfurt Hahn Airport in time for the 5pm transfer to your first guest house (about an hour drive), settle in and enjoy a good dinner.
Day 2
A relaxed start to the day with an opportunity to sleep late before a full breakfast. Meet the horses. We start todays ride after lunch at about 2pm. In the afternoon we embark at a trot and canter about the Eifelhöhen to the Trails End Ranch where, after taking care of our horses, we enjoy delicious specialities in good-quality ambience - a comfortable evening around an open fire with live music. We overnight in the typical ranch rooms.
Day 3 After a substantial breakfast we catch and groom our horses before saddling up and heading out past the "High Eight" by the Kesselinger Tal. We stop for a picnic lunch in the rustic grill hut where we might forget the time if we are not careful! In the afternoon we ride via forested route along the historical road up to the Ahr Valley. Tonight we overnight at a winegrowers' co-operative after some wine tasting and dinner at this unusual destination.
Day 4 We start with a very good breakfast at the vineyard. The riding takes us, via many different vineyards over to the Grafschaft, and the biggest fruit cultivation of the region. This afternoon we visit the well known sauna baths, swimming and taking it easy looking at the panoramic views from this little village. We sleep snugly in a country hotel.
Day 5 After the usual breakfast we set off at a trot and canter along the heights above the Ahr Rive Valley (The Ahr River is a tributary of the Rhine). We stop to enjoy some red wine and cheese in the vine-village Mayschoß and follow the red wine trail past the ruins of the castle Ahre. We end the day in a nice country saloon in Altenahr which features good food and then overnight in the earthy forester's house Villmerhöhe.
Day 6 Breakfast on the sunny meadow of the forester before departing along narrow paths to the Pützborner chapel of the Ahr, ride on past the New Year's Eve hut and stop at midday in a very good restaurant. After lunch we ride via the Denntal, rich in wildlife, back to our start point. After the ride we savour a traditional Eifeler coffee board. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 7 The riding holiday is at an end. After a last full Germany breakfast we transfer back to Frankfurt Hahn for 11am.
The weight limit for this ride is 15 st/209 lb/95 kg, please enquire if you are an experienced rider exceeding this weight.
