 HORSE RIDING HOLIDAY IN GERMANY

Unicorn has introduced several superb horse riding holidays in Germany. Because Germany is such a large European country it has a great diversity of scenery to explore. Of course there is the river Rhine with its fairytale castles perched high up its banks. Then there are craggy Bavarian mountains, crystal clear lakes, alpine meadows, spreading vineyards, the vast Black Forest and long sandy beaches. You can discover historic towns and medieval villages or maybe join in a wine festival.

Germany has coastlines bordering both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It has land borders with a multitude of European countries - France, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg.

Few countries have had as much impact on the world as Germany, a land of innovation that has given us the printing press, the automobile, aspirin and MP3 technology. This is the country where you can visit the birth places of Martin Luther, Albert Einstein and Karl Marx, of Goethe, Beethoven and the Brothers Grimm and other greats who, in some way, have forged the fate of humankind. Even the pope is German! One of the most significant changes in recent history was fall of the Berlin Wall approximately 20 years ago, and the reunification that followed.

Germany, (officially: the Federal Republic of Germany) is the largest country in Central Europe and is a federation of 16 states, similar in structure to the USA, each with a distinct and unique culture. Contrary to the general conception Germany it not a very homogeneous nation and regionalism is alive and well making it a very diverse place for its size. The highly decentralized structure ensures the capital Berlin is not as dominant over the rest of the nation as say London is in the United Kingdom or Paris in France. Germany has the largest economy in Europe and is also the world's biggest exporter nation. All Germans learn English at school, so if you are English speaking you should be able to make yourself understood in most places.

Cars are a symbol of national pride, and manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen (VW) are famous internationally for their quality, safety and style. This quality is matched by Germany's excellent network of roadways including the world famous Autobahn network, which has many sections without speed limits and attracts lots of speed hungry drivers. Amazingly for its size Germany is home to the third largest freeway/motorway network in the world. Germany also features an extensive network of high speed trains - the InterCityExpress (ICE) and is an overall global leader in precision engineered goods with a reputation for quality and high price tag to match.

Currenctly Unicorn offers 3 different equine adventures in Germany:

The undisputed financial capital of Germany is Frankfurt am Main and most likely all of continental Europe. It features an unusual modern skyline in Central Europe with its many high-rise buildings, an ever growing airport and thus the city is sometimes referred to as "Mainhattan". Not far from Frankfurt lies the Volcanic region of the Eiffel - well known for it's gourmet food, great beer and rolling green topography which reveals ancient volcanic craters on closer inspection. This is the perfect place for a horseriding holiday that combines nature, good food and welcoming guest houses - try the Vulkan Trail ride.

The historically decentralised structure lead to a regional stronghold of traditions. Germany's famous beer culture is centered around Southern Germany's biggest city (Munich), where beer is traditionally served in 1 litre mugs (but not in Kneipen (pubs) and Restaurants). Munich is also the site of the annual Oktoberfest , Europe's most visited festival and the world's largest fair.

21.3% of land is protected in Germany, one of the highest proportions in the entire world. A trip along the Rhine is on the itinerary of most travellers, as it should be. In this area our horse riding holiday Castles of the Rhine is the perfect way to explore this fascinating area on horseback. The section between Koblenz and Mainz offers vistas of steep vineyard-covered mountains punctuated by scores of castles. It’s really rather magical. Every town along the route offers cute little places to stay or camp and atmospheric places to drink and eat.

Germany's south-western regions are known for their wine growing areas (e.g. Rheinhessen and Palatinate) and Bad Duerkheim on the 'German wine route' organises the biggest wine festival worldwide with over 600,000 visitors annually. To explore some of Germany's wine making traditions on a horse riding holiday why not try our Red Wine Route?
