The independent republic of Mongolia is situated in central Asia, bordered by Russia in the north and by China in the south. It is about the size of Western Europe and has a population of only 2.4 million people.

The country has a parliamentary democracy with a president who is elected for a 4 year term. This stable form of government has been in place since 1992. Previous to this Mongolia was a satellite state of Russia called Outer Mongolia. With the fall of communism in Russia change came to Mongolia too.

At present the country is in a change over period from communism to a free market economy. For partly this reason, tourism has been developing at a pace over the last few years. Mongolia is well known for its nature and the nomadic way of life of the people.
