I assume this question is about the local representatives (not the French).There seemed some uncertainty over who was responsible for what: obviously, the local leader knew the terrain, our guide from Chengdu spoke excellent english, and our other 'leader' was a middle-man between us and these two.

The horses coped brilliantly. I was not interested in fast going, but more with safety over sometimes difficult terrain. The French contingent had been given different advice about appropriate equipment.

As noted above, the majority of the group (being the French contingent)were given different advice about the itinerary, and what equipment to bring.
Several people, myself included, suffered from the rapid gain of altitude. Diamox helped me get over this rapidly. It is easy to underestimate the effects of altitude and weather (strong sun and wind), so prcautions are vital.

The riding was not difficult, and the pace was relatively slow. However, the trip required a fair level of fitness and stamina. It may have been coincidence but those who had the most difficulty climbing the high passes were all smokers. A days' break in the middle was useful to 'recharge'.
