UNICORN TRAILS SAFARI HORSE RIDING HOLIDAY Safaris on horseback are the ultimate in horse riding holidays. Not only does a horse riding safari include all the adventure and luxury of a traditional safari, but by being on horseback one truly becomes part of the environment.
The horse keeps his own senses tuned for any game, and by looking in the direction of his ears many well camoflaged animals are revealed. Once comfortable, a horse will drop his head and graze, signalling all the antelope in the area to relax too. In this fashion one can happily drift along with e.g. a herd of giraffe observing them as they go about their normal daily routines. Particularly smaller giraffe are often most curious and interested in horses and may be tempted closer if one stays quiet.
Additional advantages of a horseback safari include being seated at a height that makes game spotting easy and the ability to cover a good distance each day in search of different herds of game.
Many questions are often raised about the safety of riding with game. Some horse riding safari holidays are suitable for all levels of rider. The trick here is to ensure there is no dangerous game about, so that in the unlikely event of a fall, the game will simply run away. Many types of game are prefectly safely viewed by any level of rider on horseback, including all types of antelope, zebra, giraffe and many smaller carnivores such as black back jackal or even cheetah. Walking safaris are also perfectly safe in these areas.
Horseback safaris are always accompanied by 2 guides, one of who may be armed depending on the game in the area. The lead guide rides in front and a backup guide brings up the rear of the small groups. The guides are experienced at reading animal behavior and in the unlikely event of an unexpected move will the riders will turn and follow the back up rider away, if neccesary at a fast pace. Thus when riding in areas with big game such as lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino one should be a confident rider with a secure seat.
