TRANSYLVANIA INN TRAIL - ROMANIA

more photos | enquiry | availability check | ride reviews

This part of Romania boasts unspoilt nature with meadows scattered with wild flowers, woods, creeks and hills with beautiful views. The perfect place for a horse riding holdiay. You will encounter shepherds with flocks of sheep, goats and buffaloes and have many opportunities to meet the local villagers whose traditional lives seem lost in time. Horses are part of the culture here and still extensively used in agricultural work. The climate is warm, dry and sunny almost the whole summer long. This is a point to point trail with the luxury of returning to a comfortable base with 2 or 3 bed rooms and en suite or shared bathroom each night. The resident dogs are very welcoming too! The nearby castle of Dracula is a must see on a visit here.

SAMPLE ITINERARY - TRANSYLVANIA INN TRAIL

Day 1

Arrival at the airport and transfer to the inn. Making your acquaintance with the horses, see the herds of cattle, goats and buffaloes come home after grazing in the fields around the village. Have a drink and snacks under the vines or at the open logfire and try our fine cuisine.

Day 2
Choose your horse and ride to the village of Sona. Check that you are comfortable with your horse and the saddle. We may visit the old forester Traian if he is not out in the woods and have lunch at the Asobar. We ride along the Sapte Mamelle and back down on the lower parts along the banks of the river Olt. Trots, a lot of canters and gallops to try out what everybody likes and is comfortable with. Back at the inn you have a nice hot shower, aperitif and snacks and a nice 4-5 course dinner.

Day 3 After a good English breakfast and having prepared our lunchboxes we now leave the inn and head for the village of Dacia. The local car of Romania is named after that but in the village you hardly ever see one. The local traffic is with carts and horses. The trek of today is rather long and goes through rough terrain with lots of gallops. We have lunch in the open fields. We leave the horses with Dorina (with one tooth and her simple father) in a former Saxon house with a yard and stables. In the evening Bertina and Latsi come over to collect us and bring us to the inn in Halmeag for bathing and dining.

Day 4
After again a good breakfast and preparing lunch we take off by car and go to Dacia where we prepare the horses for the ride and head off to the in west, passing the villages of Jibert and Lovnic. We have a picnic lunch on our way. We then ride to the direction of Barcut. We stable the horses over there and await Latsi or Bertina in the local bar to collect us to bring us to the inn, on the way home do a little shopping in Fagaras.

Day 5
After breakfast we collect the horses in Barcut and now head for Selistat. We have a nice ride through valleys, meadows and forests and hills and pass the village of Retis. In Selistat the horses are stabled in another Saxon house owned by the stud. We have a drink in the local pub awaiting Latsi to pick us up and bring us back to the inn in Halmeag.

Day 6
After a relaxed start and being brought back by car to Selistat, we saddle for Cincu, where the Lipizzaner stud is located. This trail is somewhat shorter. After arrival you can do you some sightseeing on the stud and the village. Further relax on the hill with beautiful views on the village and the Carpathian Mountains. By car we again return to the inn.

Day 7
A good breakfast is needed for this last day as we ride the 50 kms back to the inn in Halmeag steadily. Lots of canters and gallops. We have lunch in the open field. Arriving in Halmeag we have a "Masa Festive" and a good night's sleep.

Day 8 Again you need a good breakfast to face the voyage back to the 21st century. The end of your riding holiday is marked as you say goodbye and transfer to the airport.
