A journey through the land of a thousand and one castles. Going from one medieval fortified town (bastide) to another you will discover as many historic sites as the people that welcome you to them. You will have the opportunity to feel like a local when you taste the local gastronomy. Along the journey are visits to the bastides of Monflanquin, Monpazier, Belves, Domme, and the capital of Black Perigord noir: Sarlat. Riding on fit Selle Fracais and Anglo Arabs at a pace that is faster than the average trail, you will pass by the castles of Gavaudun, Bonaguil, Biron, Castelnaud la Chapelle. If you go to the Perigords, you are sure to want to go back!
SAMPLE ITINERARY - PERIGORD NOIRE
Day 1
Arrival and transfer from Bergerac airport at 6.30pm in the late afternoon to Hotel
Day 2
After breakfast at 8am we prepare the horses and leave at around 10 o’clock. A picnic is provided which we enjoy in the fortified town of Monflanquin, which dates from the 13th century and a visit of the town is included. In the evening we arrive at Gavaudin where we visit its castle which also dates from the 13th century. In the evening we enjoy a meal and spend the night at a B&B with a swimming pool. 5.5 hours riding
Day 3
Breakfast at 8am again and after having left the valley of Gavaudin, we pass through the small village of Cuzorn where a ruined castle and cave dwellings can be seen. We arrive at the castle of Bonaguil where a picnic is provided and there is an opportunity to visit the castle. We spend the night in Melis holiday village or in a hotel depending on the season. 5 hours riding
Day 4
We depart from Cuzorn at around 10am and head for the castle of Biron, which dates from the 15th century. Once there we can enjoy a picnic under the ramparts of the castle of Biron and also stop for a visit. In the afternoon we follow an old roman trail to arrive in the fortified town Monpazier which is classed as ‘one of the most beautiful villages in France’ and enjoy a visit of the town. We enjoy dinner and stay overnight in the hotel Londres. 5 hours riding
Day 5
We depart from Monpazier at around 10am and enjoy a picnic in the small village of Fongalop. In the late afternoon we arrive in Belves, which is also a fortified town, and have a visit of its caves. We have dinner and stay overnight in a local B&B. 5 hours riding.
Day 6
We depart at around 10 am and head in the direction of Milandes. Once there we enjoy a picnic by the castle followed by a visit. By the end of the afternoon we arrive in Cenac. We spend the night at a hotel in Domme, which is a fortified town dating from the 13th century and enjoy a visit. 5 hours riding.
Day 7
We depart at around 10am and head for Sarlat. During the day’s ride we pass Passage the Rock Gageac, a medieval village situated on the bank of the Dordogne River. Once Sarlat is reached we enjoy a visit and dinner before spending the night in a hotel. 4 hours riding.
Day 8
Departure after breakfast and transfer back to Bergerac airport.

The weight limit for this ride is 18 st/253 lb/115 kg, please enquire if you are an experienced rider exceeding this weight.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
All transfers from the meeting point at set times, meals, wine with dinner, accommodation in shared rooms with shared bathroom, riding, horses, tack, experienced guide, translator, luggage transport and excursions described in itinerary, water bottle on day 1 which must then be looked after and filled up for consecutive days, a back up vehicle when there are at least 5 riders
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED
International travel, insurance, single supplement if required, alcoholic and canned drinks other than wine with dinner, any extra to the menus, items of a personal nature and gratuities.
